AI-KPPKS: Collaborative Cervical Cancer Patient Education
Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Indonesia. Too often, patients face delays in diagnosis and treatment because their information needs are unmet. AI-KPPKS is a joint initiative led by Universitas Gadjah Mada and the University of Melbourne’s Nossal Institute, supported by the Australia–Indonesia Institute, to co-create patient education materials with doctors, patients, and survivors. The program combines research, education, and collaboration to strengthen health literacy, improve patient engagement, and support Indonesia’s National Cervical Cancer Elimination Plan 2023–2030.
What We’re Building
AI-KPPKS is more than an education project—it is a foundation for sustainable patient empowerment.
We are building a collaborative system that connects doctors, patients, and survivors, ensuring that medical accuracy is paired with cultural relevance. Flipcharts and fact sheets translate complex medical information into clear, accessible language, giving women and families the tools they need to understand prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Education is central to our mission: through a co-designed curriculum, we equip healthcare providers with practical strategies for patient-centered communication. To test these approaches, AI-KPPKS is piloting materials in hospitals, refining them through continuous feedback, and creating a model that can be scaled across Indonesia’s health system.
Why It Matters
Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when detected early, yet unmet information needs often lead to late diagnosis and treatment dropouts. AI-KPPKS matters because it is about protecting lives today and tomorrow. By empowering women with accessible knowledge, we ensure they can make informed decisions about their health. By supporting doctors with communication tools, we strengthen patient-centered care even under pressure. By equipping families with understanding, we build networks of support that reduce treatment abandonment. And by aligning with Indonesia’s national elimination plan, we contribute to a collective effort to eradicate cervical cancer within a generation.
Primary Beneficiaries
AI-KPPKS is designed for the people most affected by cervical cancer.
Patients newly diagnosed gain clarity and confidence about their treatment journey. Families and caregivers, who often carry the emotional and practical burden, receive guidance to support loved ones. Doctors and medical residents, who stand at the frontline of care, benefit from tools that make communication easier and more effective. Policymakers and health institutions, tasked with shaping national strategies, gain evidence-based resources that strengthen cancer care delivery. Together, these groups form the backbone of change.
Engagement Framework
Lasting impact cannot be achieved through one-off interventions. AI-KPPKS is building a blueprint for engagement that is continuous, inclusive, and sustainable. We foster collaborative workshops where doctors, patients, and survivors co-create solutions, ensuring that every voice is heard. We invest in patient-centered communication training that improves trust and reduces barriers to care. We commit to ongoing evaluation and revision, recognizing that education must evolve with patient needs. And we ensure open access to fact sheets and flipcharts, so hospitals and associations across Indonesia can adopt and adapt them, creating a cycle of shared progress.
